Motion Sickness in Dogs , Easy way to deal with it!
MOTION SICKNESS IN DOGS
Almost everyone for the love of their dogs, most times, when heading out with the car, they take them along. We all love car rides, most people do. So does our dogs and lots of other dogs. There’s just one downside to car rides, and that’s the ” notorious” car sickness. Just as some of us get car sick sometimes, it is not quite shocking to realize that man’s best friend; dogs, also get car sick. Car sickness can also be called motion sickness and is characterized in dogs by drooling, yawning, constant licking of the lips and so on. Motion sickness in dogs has not limited to cars alone, it can also occur in the air and sea. Therefore, whenever you and your dog are out on a journey, either by land, air or sea, bear it in mind to always keep an eye on him. What use would it be keeping our eyes on our dogs if we don’t know anything (symptoms, treatment, prevention, etc.) about motion sickness in dogs? I have put together concise but elaborate information on motion sickness below.
SYMPTOMS
Younger dogs and puppies are apt to experience motion sickness. This happens mostly because they are still not fully developed and the ear structure which maintains equilibrium is also still undeveloped. Older dogs can experience motion sickness too, but on rare occasions and is usually as a result of stress. Motion sickness in dogs can also be linked to a bad travel experience in previous times. Several symptoms have earlier been noted. Some other symptoms that can’t go unnoticed include;
- Inactivity and listlessness
- Vomiting
- Uneasiness
- incessant whining

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
The ultimately best way to prevent your dog from further experiencing motion sickness is to gradually develop his endurance for car rides while making him comfortable at the same time. You can do this by walking your dog towards your car severally without actually entering the car. Sometimes too, you can sit in your car with your dog without driving. You also don’t need to turn on the ignition. When you notice your dog has gotten somewhat used to your car, begin by taking short rides with your dog, preferably only a few blocks away from your house. Increase the distance during each ride. Don’t forget to use a specially designed dog seat belt or a crate (carrier) to hold him in place during these rides. This would also help him face forward rather than out the window. Other preventive and treatment measures are listed below;
- Limit your dog’s food and water consumption before heading out for the road. This would reduce the probability your dog’s of nausea/vomiting during the travel.
- Equalise the inside air pressure and the outside air pressure by lowering the car windows a few inches.
- Give your dog a break from car rides ranging from one to two weeks.
- You can also give your dog medication to reduce nausea.
N/B It always good to check with your veterinarian or pet clinic before giving any to your dog, and what dosage you should give them.

- During long trips, stop frequently. Your dog needs a break in order avoid any occurrence of motion sickness in dogs.
Eventually, most dogs outgrow motion sickness. For dogs that do not outgrow motion sickness and for older dogs, several drugs which prevent and treat motion sickness in dogs are available. Avoid giving drugs to your dogs without a visit to the veterinarian. This would help you a great deal in administering the right dosage to your dog.

This was a wonderful read. I never would have thought to sit in the car with my dog without driving. My German Shepard can be a bit skittish when around my truck, so I will use your recommended technique of building his endurance.
I do have a question though. You recommended Dramamine to give to my dog. What exactly does that do? I want to limit the amount of drugs I give my dog. I look forward to hearing your answer.
Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!
