Ignoring your dog’s anxiety is not a good thing to do because it could result in more serious health issues. Handling it is not an easy thing but a very effective way to curb it is through getting them a  Dog anxiety vest. Anxiety vests work in almost the same way hugging a distraught person or swaddling a child works. Anxiety vests apply pressure on the dog’s chest, and that provides a calming effect on the dog. So if you’re thinking of buying an dog anxiety vest for your dog here are some tips to guide you;

  • Choose the size that fit the dog’s measurements; this is a very important thing to note when buying anxiety vests. The effectiveness of an dog anxiety vest lies in the pressure it applies to the dog. To provide maximum comfort and relief to your dog, ensure you take accurate measurements and buy an anxiety vest that fits.

  • Fabric; The material used in manufacturing anxiety vests are vital to the effect the vest would have on the anxious dog. Some of the materials used to make anxiety vests are nylon, cotton, and polyester. When buying anxiety vests, look at the thickness of the fabric. A very thick fabric might have a suffocating effect on the dog by being too hot. Certain anxiety vests are made with breathable fabric that is more convenient for the dog. Cotton is a breathable material while nylon is durable.

  • Buckles; when buying an anxiety vest, note the kind of buckles it has. Vests with buckles that are easy to tighten and open are most convenient to use. Anxious dogs are mostly irritable and using a vest that would be hard to wear and might cause more tension than relief for the dog. Also, make sure the vest would not be too easily torn off when it’s caught on something. Get a secure vest that would speed up the smoothening of the dog.

  • Adjustable Vests; Certain anxiety dog vests come with adjustable settings that enable you to adjust the vest to make the dog comfortable. When buying anxiety vests, these types of vests should be highly considered. When dogs are anxious, and vests are put on them, the pressure can be reduced as they calm down to give them more comfort, this is why the anxiety vests with adjustable straps are essential.

    Hey Mercy, thanks for your description regarding dogs anxiety vests. I’ve seen plenty of dogs wearing these vests but was oblivious in understanding their importance. To be honest I thought dog owners were trying to keep their dogs fashionably warm, there’s my ignorance.
    We used to have the most friendly sheltie dog when I was a kid but when the Council came to empty the bins she would go into a trembling panic which was quite worrying. These vests would have been the perfect solution to apply pressure on her chest and calm her down.
    Thank you for explaining,
    Simon.

    Wow. I’m going to be honest here and say that I didn’t realize that dogs even got anxiety, let alone needing help with it. That’s really interesting. I don’t have a dog now, but I’ll definitely keep in mind that that’s something to look for. Do you know what triggers it?

    Hi Mercy,

    I could of done with this article about six years ago! My sister had a Pitbull (of all dogs to have) and he was a real whinger and pacer. He was very skitty and go straight away from anyone he hadn’t seen in a long time and naturally strangers as well.

    Poor thing, I didn’t realise it was anxiety.

    So, you recommend the nylon one for breathablility? Out of the nylon and cotton which would you buy for your own dog?

    So, I have an odd question. They have these vests for dogs, however, I suffered anxiety for years and I really could of done with something like this myself lol why haven’t they used this for humans?

    Seems silly to ask but why not is what I say.

    Regards,

    Philip.
