Everything You Need To Know About Yorkie Dogs

The Yorkshire terrier dogs popularly known and referred to as Yorkie dogs have been around for a relatively long time. This breed of dogs is characteristically small and hairy, with an ideal character trait that makes them fit as good human companions. Nowadays, more people seem to be having a preference for Yorkie dogs, and this could be a reason why an increased number of individuals are buying them for their homes.

But then, there are some peculiar features of these dogs- which you should know, especially as pertains to their overall dispositions, as well as their health and care requirements. This would help the prospective owner to adequately plan ahead, and be sure they have what it takes to effectively care for a Yorkie.

What to expect in a Yorkie dog; their dispositional tendencies

One of the reasons why the Yorkies have thrived well in their own regard is the fact that they are a strong-willed and determined breed of dogs, that can conveniently pull through with set tasks. Some people may refer to this as an aggressive tendency, but even still, Yorkie dogs can be hot and affectionate especially to kindly known faces.

As much as Yorkie dogs like to stay close to their owners, they tend to quickly recognize any rude behavior towards them and may fight back as much as is necessary. Hence, if you’re housing them in your home, you must be ready to show the kindest behavior; and then you wouldn’t have the slightest issue with them. This also implies that the approach you use in raising them from when they were very young, is an important determiner as to how their temperament patterns turn out. They show a desire for attention and would thrive well if they can get a feeling that they’re special, as well as all the other required care. In fact, you must be able to spare a lot of time, patience, and attention for Yorkies if you would want to have them. This is because they require regular grooming, and regular clean up, as well as detailed medical attention from time to time.

Yorkies may prove to be such a set of stubborn creatures, and would normally want to show unyielding behaviors sometimes. The best way to keep them from displaying this is to start off early, training them to behave well, while incorporating a lot of directed methods such as being firm and tender at almost the same time. The peculiarities of teaching a Yorkie dog may be a reason why it is advisable to buy them when they are yet puppies, and just beginning to grow.

Yorkies think too highly of themselves

Although Yorkie dogs are generally always small in size and carry a soft look- if you don’t know them, these breed of dogs are highly assertive and would think they can always rise to any challenge and conveniently defend themselves. Hence, it should not be a surprise when you see a Yorkshire terrier dog barking and raging out at a greater enemy, such as another dog that is much bigger. This could be an advantage for the owner, as the dog may prove useful in raising the prompt alarm of impending danger, without fearing a consequence for its actions. But although this is some good trait, it doesn’t change the fact that the Yorkies are small and may not amount to anything in the face of real danger. Hence, if you’re buying a Yorkie, then you should remember you’re buying one of the most loyal and confident pet you could get, rather than an ideal security dog. Although they can serve excellently well when it comes to security signaling, they cannot be said to stand fit as guard dogs.

Health and hereditary complications

Health and hereditary complications are some of the delicate issues to consider when buying terrier dogs of this breed. Yorkies have some predisposing hereditary faults which can bring some discomfort for the dog, as well as for the owners. Some of the common hereditary inclined diseases include (and are not limited to) liver shunt (portosystemic shunt), retinal dysplasia, and patellar luxation (also known as floating kneecaps). Other health issues include bronchitis, skin allergies, and hypoglycemia. Hence, the dog owners must be observant enough to recognize any changes that may be starting to occur, to seek veterinary advice.

Merits of keeping Yorkie dogs

Housing Yorkies come with accompanying benefits, which may not be found in other dog breeds, or not in the same high measure as in the Yorkshire terrier. Some of these merits include:

•    They are considered to be largely hypoallergenic

By this, it means Yorkie dogs are largely safe and can be kept by persons with several allergy conditions. This is because they have less shedding of their hair coats, and thus, there is lesser chances of them triggering the allergic conditions in their keepers. Although this cannot be said to be a hundred percent definite, it is in fact well above average score. Yokies are one of the safest dogs in this regard, and there are in fact no dogs that are totally hypoallergenic. So, if you have allergic conditions and you wish to keep a dog for a pet, the Yorkshire terrier is a valid option to choose from.

•    Cost of feeding them is relatively cheap

Although you may spend a reasonable amount buying a Yorkie, it is considered to be the only major expense you would have made; especially if you have to consider what is obtainable with other dog breed types. Caring for Yorkies is not capital intensive as you don’t have to spend so much on food. Yorkies don’t eat much and would feed on the least quantity of food, as compared to other popular breeds. The only important thing to put into consideration is the quality of their meals; they require maximum food nutrients to grow well and stay healthy.

They’re so cute! I wasn’t aware that there were dogs considered hypoallergenic, this is fantastic for those allergic to animals. You’re right, it’s very important for animal owners to care for their pet’s health responsibly. While they’re small in stature, I guess you’re right when you say a Yorkie stands tall in so many ways.

Hi Mercy! I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life but never a Yorkie. My niece’s kids are extremely allergic to just about everything but they did well with a cute little Yorkie. You mentioned the expense of the dog itself so I couldn’t help mentioning another option is for people to check around not only at their local animal shelters and Humane Society but look for specific Yorkie rescue organizations. In addition to the satisfaction of knowing you rescued a dog, you could probably get one already well trained (for people who don’t feel very comfortable with training a dog). At any rate, they are adorable little doggies, and thanks for the info on them!
